This is Bosco Kubwimana’s third year of processing coffee at Butembo and our third year of working with him.

We first visited Butembo in May 2015 at the end of their first season (construction was only finished in March) and we bought all the coffee they produced that first year. Bosco used to be the engineer at his brother Justin’s station Mahembe, a great station a few miles away from Butembo that we have also worked with in the past. After a few years of saving and learning Bosco wanted to set up his own operation and secured a loan to build his brand new station.

Butembo is located in the village of Ruhingo, a stunning location on the shores of Lake Kivu. The lake dominates the landscape in this part of Rwanda with countless inlets and islands making for a stunningly beautiful region. Freshly harvested cherries are delivered by smallholder farmers to Butembo (many brought by boat over the lake) then pulped on a single disc pulper Bosco built himself before being dry fermented for around 12 hours and dried on raised beds for 10 – 14 days.

We were lucky enough to visit Butembo again this year and it was great to see the station going from strength to strength. We have once again bought Bosco’s entire production and its out favourite Rwandan coffee. We’re so happy to be working with Bosco and watching Butembo grow and develop and the coffee is becoming a highlight of the year as both a single origin and part of our Goldstone Espresso blend.
