This is a community coffee lot made up from the harvest of several small organic farms in the Cañada region of northern Oaxaca.
The farms are all located around the town of San Mateo Yoloxochitlan close to Oaxaca’s state borders with Veracruz and Puebla.
Yoloxochitlan a word taken from the local indigenous language, Nahuatl, and is the name of the plant know in Spanish as ‘Flor de Corazon’ or Flower of the Heart in English. This medical plant grows in abundance in northern Oaxaca and has been used for centuries for homoeopathic remedies and treatments.
This is our first ever smallholder mixed lot from Mexico and it represents an exciting step forward. A large amount of Mexican coffees are produced by small, organic farms like those in San Mateo Yoloxochitlan. Traditionally these coffees were blended into large commercial lots and the organic certification was more highly regarded than cup quality. Thankfully this is changing and the producers in San Mateo are committed to quality with all the lots that went into this blend selected based on cup profile and quality.
Typically, we look to larger single estate farms to find the best of Mexican coffee but it is super exciting to see coffees like this from typical smallholder farmers tasting so clean, balanced and delicious.
