Mexico is one of our favourite origins and is really developing as a specialty coffee producing origin. This is a very special coffee from Finca El Estribo in Veracruz, south east Mexico.
We travelled to Veracruz this year to take part in the ‘Aromas del Pico’ event, a competition for coffee producers to enter their best microlots. Our Head of Coffee, Al (pictured centre) was one of the completion judges who cupped their way through more than 100 hundred coffees over four days to decide the top 20 lots. Those best coffees were then auctioned off to the highest bidders and this was one of four lots Al purchased for Small Batch and his personal favourite of the whole competition.
El Estribo (which means ‘the stirrup’ in Spanish) is owned by Adan Altamirano and is located in Zongolica, Veracruz, very close to where the competition was held. Adan has great heritage as an elite level coffee producer, he won Mexico’s Cup of Excellence completion in 2014 with the number 1 winning lot and as well Aromas del Pico this year, El Estribo also placed eighth in the 2017 Mexico Cup of Excellence.
As the farm is so close Adan travelled to the auction and it was an honour to meet him and tell him how much we enjoyed his coffee. He has invited us to come visit the farm next year and we can’t wait for the next harvest to come around.
