Spring has sprung in the UK and that means our seasonal coffee focus turns to East Africa, the first of our two East African arrival seasons. Springtime always welcomes the landing of fresh coffees from Ethiopia and Kenya, one of the most exciting times in the coffee year!
This is our first African arrival of the season and is an outstanding washed coffee from the Edido washing station in Yirgacheffe region, Ethiopia. Nearly all coffee from Ethiopia has to be sold through the Ethiopian Coffee Exchange (ECX) and is mostly sold only by grade and region. In recent years, the ECX has started to allow more flexibility around traceability in the Exchange which means that even though this
coffee was purchased by our importer through the ECX auction, we have some knowledge of where exactly it comes from.
While the ECX is not a perfect system by any means it is still the primary option for purchasing coffee in Ethiopia and many of the world’s best coffees are sold this way. All purchases through the exchange are driven by the coffees performance on the cupping table and this washed lot stood out as among the best Yirgacheffe coffees we cupped this year.
