ROASTERS NOTES:

A standout single producer lot from Jhon Jairo, a member of the Tatama Coffee Growers Association in Santuario, Risaralda. Dark chocolate and red grape flavours make a great all round brewer.

This single producer lot comes from Jhon Jairo a member of the Tatama Coffee Growers Association in Santuario, a small hill town in Risaralda department. Risaralda is one of Colombia’s biggest coffee producing areas and this is our first ever lot from the department that borders Quindío, an area we have sourced many fine coffees from in the past.

Tatama is an association of 210 smallholder farming families that was formed in 2013 to improve the collective quality and value of the member’s coffee. The association buys parchment (dry, unhulled coffee) from its members at the daily market rate. Each delivery is then cupped individually and if the quality is high and the coffee scores 84 points or higher the farmer receives an extra 5,000 pesos per quintale. When the coffee is eventually sold the farmer then receives a third payment which is the remaining profit of the coffee after all the associations costs have been subtracted. This is genuinely a situation where paying a higher price for the coffee results in more money going back to the farmer.

As well as finding a path to market for its member’s coffee, Tatama is also able to help with micro-loans and finance to its members to help them invest in infrastructure and maintenance. We visited the association in November 2017 and loved their set up. We cupped a bunch of delicious coffee while we there and this lot from Jhon Jairo really stood out. Jhon was on hand to tell us about his coffee and we’re thrilled we were able to buy it and now have it here in the roastery.
