Ethiopia Night - Thursday 13th July

Ethiopia is our origin of the month for July and Small Batch are proud to present a night celebrating all things Ethiopia at Small Batch Jubilee on Thursday 13th July. There will be Ethiopian food, coffee, music, a raffle with sweet sweet prizes and some great talks on Ethiopian coffee purchasing and also about our charity of the month.

 Ethiopia Night

Working in partnership with Sussex University we will be raising money for the excellent charity Preventing Podo. Podoconiosis (or Podo) is a little known but widespread and treatable tropical disease which affects people around the world but most especially in Ethiopia.

Brighton and Sussex Medical School is the global hub for podoconiosis research. The Preventing Podo campaign was launched to turn their ground-breaking research into practical action, improving the lives of some of the world’s poorest and most disadvantaged people. So far, with the help of the Sussex community, they have helped to:

  • treat over 35,000 patients, none of whom had previously received healthcare for podo
  • distribute over 330,000 pairs of shoes
  • train over 450 health workers, volunteers and staff
  • raise awareness across many rural communities about the causes and effects of podo

Small Batch became involved with Preventing Podo after Small Batch founder Al and Head of Marketing, Nick went back to their Alma Mater, Sussex, for an interview for Falmer Magazine. Ethiopia is a really important origin for Small Batch and we have been buying awesome coffee there for years and with the charitable work that Preventing Podo undertake in rural, coffee-growing areas of the country, it just made sense to support this great cause.

Back in April, Al, Nick and Small Batch barista Aaron all took part in the 10k run at the Brighton Marathon and were part of a team of over 100 runners raising over £34,000 for the charity. We’re continuing our support and partnership with Preventing Podo this month both with this fundraising evening and also with our latest Ethiopian single origin coffee which will be launched on the night. For every bag of our Ethiopia Fero Farmers Union purchased we will be making a donation to Preventing Podo.
