Its competiton time again, and this time the prize is a big one. We are giving away a mighty 3 months free coffee at any and all Small Batch locations*.

All you have to do get your caffeine addled hands on these 90 cups of delicious is post a picture on our facebook of something Small Batch related (a keep cup, some beans, a staff member) in the weirdest, wildest, most interesting or humourous location.

As this might obviously require some travel, the competion will be open throughout the summer and the final judging will be done in September, so get packing and dont forget your Small Batch supplies.

To give you some inspiration we sent some of the staff off around the globe to kick things off…

*3 months free coffee equals a voucher for 90 free coffees from any Small Batch, does not include beans or filter coffees

Just a quickie tonight as its getting late, but if you are looking for some coffee this christmas then I would look no further than the Finca Santa Clara Dwarf Bourbon or ‘Bourboncillo’ from Antigua, Guatemala. This is a wonderful delicate chocolate orange of a coffee and goes great with milk. Its awesome as espresso or filter and has been one of the most popular brews on the syphon bar down at myhotel. This is my favourtite coffee of 2011 but it wont be around for long as we have only have about 50kg’s left and theres a whole crop of new Brazil coffees waiting to be roasted in January….

Guatemala Finca Santa Clara Bourboncillo is £6.95 for 335g and is available at Jubilee Street, Wilbury Road, The Roastery or online before Monday. Get Some.

The problem with drinking great coffee is it quickly becomes impossible to drink high street coffee on a day to day basis. These two great books make tracking down these purveoyors of good brews a lot easier in both our own fair city and the capital.

Published by Brighton based Vespertine Press the two guides have become essential companions for coffee connosieurs in the South East and are beatifully printed and furnished with great photographs and background information on roasters and coffee in general.

The books are available from Jubilee Street, the Brighton and Hove Guide is £6.99 and the London book £10

Struggling to find a present for the coffee lover in your life? Well thankfully your frindly local coffee roasters are here to help, every day for the next week we’ll be highlighting some great little coffee gadgets we have on offer to brighten up your Christmas, starting off with the Aeropress.

The Aeropress was created in 2005 by Alan Adler the Stanford engineering proffesor who invented the Aerobie and has since taken the coffee world by storm.

The beauty of the Aeropress is its simplicity. It is incredibly easy to brew great coffee with, even easier to clean and is great for travelling with. You can use different grind settings and brew times to make espresso or filter style coffees and there are hundreds of different methods for creating your perfect brew. Check out brewmethods.com for some of the most popular or check out our preferred method here

The Aeropress comes boxed up and ready to rock with 350 filter papers all for the bargain price of £20.00 and I cannot think of a better value christmas coffee gift.

We have Aeropresses in store at Wilbury Rd and Jubilee Street, just drop in and the staff will show how awesome they are. Alternatively you can order online before Monday for pre Christmas delivery.

Well hundreds of you do every week from our Brighton Station coffee cart. These are familiar faces to the many commuters who are forced to leave our fair city each morning and seek their fortunes in Crawley, Croydon, London and beyond. Said faces have been augmented recently, I think you’ll agree, by a fine array of moustaches. The cart boys have all been growing these facial attachments throughout November for the now uber-popular Movember charity.

Started in 1999 down under to raise money and awareness of men’s health issues including prostate and testicular cancer as well as depression, Movember has become a worldwide phenomenon. You’ve probably noticed many a moustache (or “Mo” as the Australasians would say) on the streets this past month, with plenty of Small Batch customers getting involved too.

Thanks to the daily donations of the regular customers at Brighton station this month our seedy looking baristas have raised £220 in small change. I know this because I just had to count it all but it was well worth it.

Following this small success, we will be making Movember company policy for 2012 and rolling it out across all outlets. Moustaches will be mandatory* regardless of gender or position.

So here’s a big thank you to our Brighton Station customers and their generosity and a salute to all Mo Bros out there spreading the word about men’s health and raising money themselves.

*policy may not be legally enforcable.

We’ve been hatching a bit of a plan for a while now which some of you will already know about, but now that work has begun we can officially announce the impending opening of our new shop in myhotel Brighton on Jubilee Street.

Work is underway and we will be opening the doors bright and early on Monday November 7th. We’re stoked to be working with a great independent company like myhotel and to have a central Brighton location. The shop will become our flagship store with more space than ever before and room for 60 covers.

We will be roasting on site in a little 1kg roster, brewing syphon coffees on a dedicated brew bar and rocking two different espresso machines, one for blends and one for single origins. Coffee cupping (tasting) and barista training will be a big part of the new shop for both professional and recreational coffee heads.

In conjunction with our catering partners The Flour Pot the food offering will be much expanded from our other outlets. I saw a sneak peak of the menu the other day and all I’m gonna say is lamb harissa and almond sausage rolls (and maybe passion fruit tart with soft meringue!!)
