Nova shares its name with owners Agnes and Felix’s small chain of chemists in the region.
Situated on the edge of Lake Muhazi, about one hour north of Kigali, Nova is a new washing station for us, run by owner Agnes Mukamushinja and quality manager Liberat Naayizeye. Agnes and her husband Felix bought the station two years ago and gave it the name Nova, the same name as their small chain of chemists in the area.
Liberat hails from neighbouring Burundi where he has over 30 years experience of running coffee wet mills and for such a new operation Nova is a well-oiled machine. Since purchasing the mill from a co-operative in 2014 Agnes has already installed a new three disc pulping machine, built brand new fermentation tanks lined with tiles rather than concrete and built a new storage warehouse for the coffee that was previously kept in a tent open to the elements.
Given Liberat's experience the coffee is processed beautifully and in a typical Burundian style. This includes underwater fermentation followed by a six hour soak in clean water before drying on raised beds.
Despite being a new operation there is so much good work already happening and so much potential. Agnes is new to coffee but is eager to learn, wants to develop the station and with Liberat alongside is already producing one of our favourite coffees from Rwanda this year.
