The Grand Fromage collection, our specially curated series of outstanding and interesting coffees, is back with a coffee that has become very special to us and to which we have gone to great lengths to purchase this year.
Mexico is one of our favourite origins and in the last few years speciality coffee production has started to flourish there with quality, infrastructure and innovation all improving rapidly. This coffee from Adan Altamirano is a great example of this new wave of top quality Mexican coffees.
We first met Adan last April when we travelled to Veracruz to take part in the ‘Aromas del Pico’ event, a competition for coffee producers to enter their best micro lots. Our green coffee buyer Al was one of the competition judges who cupped their way through more than 100 hundred lots over four days to decide the top 20 coffees. Those best coffees were then auctioned off to the highest bidders and El Estribo was one of four lots we purchased.
El Estribo (which means ‘the stirrup’ in Spanish) is located in Zongolica, Veracruz, and Adan has great heritage as an elite level coffee producer. El Estribo won Mexico’s Cup of Excellence competition in 2014 with the number 1 winning lot and is a perennial finalist, taking eighth place in the 2017 Cup of Excellence.
We are so thrilled to have Adan’s coffee back for the second year. We couldn’t make it to the Aromas competition this year but we were still able to bid remotely through a friend who was attending the competition and auction and managed to secure the coffee from El Estribo once again.
