An exceptionally clean and complex coffee for Indonesia. Caramel and brown sugar give way to nectarine, peach and tropical fruit acidity with a peach ice tea after-taste. This is a lovely filter coffee that also works nicely as iced coffee.

Every now and then we come across a very special coffee from Indonesia, and this fully washed Sigarar Utang variety from the Frinsa Estate in Java is just one of those coffees. We don’t buy a huge array of coffee from Indonesia – coffees from this region are often not processed as well as in other areas and this, combined with the terroir characteristics, can lead to super heavy bodied coffees that lack in complexity and acidity. This makes our Sigarar Utang coffee an extra special find. Sigarar Utang is a local Bourbon/Tim Tim hybrid variety that produces harvestable crops after just two years (‘Sigarar Utang' translates loosely as 'repay debt sooner'). The trees are very small and belong to the dwarf bourbon family, an alternate name for the variety is ‘Ateng’ the name of a famous Indonesian dwarf comedian. The Frinsa Estate is located in the Weninggalih area of western Java, one of 17,500 islands that make up Indonesia and a region traditionally more geared toward the production of palm sugar. The Estate is run by Wildan Mustofa who has faced many challenges in introducing specialty coffee to the area. When he rst set up in 2010 Wildan had to bring in coffee pickers as many of the local men also worked in the cities and the women would often migrate to other countries for seasonal work as palm sugar could not support a family for the whole year. Gradually over the years, and by committing to producing excellent quality coffee, Wildan was able to prove the value in growing coffee and the local people began to stay in the region all year and grow coffee as a sustainable livelihood. The coffees from Frinsa are now some of the finest we have come across from Indonesia, with clean, complex cup profiles that hint at a world of possibilities for Indonesian coffee.
