We have been buying coffee from Fernando Alfaro and his brothers at Finca El Carmen for 8 years now, since 2010, our longest standing producer relationship! The coffees from this farm are Small Batch classics now and will be more than familiar to longtime subscribers.
El Carmen is situated outside Ataco, a beautifully preserved colonial country town in Ahuachapan. The farm was built by Fernando’s great-grandfather in 1915 and the wet mill (the first wet mill to be built in El Salvador) was constructed by his grandfather. Fernando and his brothers are now the fourth generation of Alfaros to grow coffee here as well as processing their own and many other producers’ coffee at their now state of the art mill.
The last few years have been really tough for producers in El Salvador as coffee leaf rust disease has decimated crop yields and cup quality. Farmers like Fernando have had a really hard time and in many cases have had to re-plant whole swathes of their farms. This was the case at El Carmen where Fernando had to replant a large amount of his trees four years ago.
Thankfully those trees are now reaching peak maturity and are tasting fantastic once again. As well as being a great farmer, Fernando is also a processing expert and his natural process is one of the sweetest and most refined that we receive every year.
