Fazenda Nossa Senhora de Fatima is a great example of a cutting edge and ethically minded Brazilian estate.
Coffee farms in Brazil are typically much (much!) larger than in other countries and Senhora’s 235 hectares containing 895,000 coffee trees is relatively modest for the country.
Situated in the famed Triangulo Mineiro region of Minas Gerais state, Senhora produces only 100% organic green coffee beans from a wide range of varieties and different processes in its rich, red volcanic soil and has become internationally renowned for its organic methods.
The farm is managed by agronomist Ricardo Aguair Resende and has a real dedication to social and environmental conditions. Livestock are reared on the farm, there is an area of preserved wilderness and native trees are being replanted in previously cleared areas.
All coffee cultivation and processing is pesticide and chemical free and the farm's 110 workers are provided with transport to and from the neighbouring towns. The farm also supports community development programs through their workers and is able to provide critical healthcare through these initiatives.
Coffee farming in Brazil is much larger in scale and more heavily mechanized than anywhere else in the world so it is great to know there are large estates like Senhora de Fatima that are driven by quality, ecological and ethical concerns.
